Living in Cochin alongside the last Jewish generation, Edna Fernandes tells of their ancestors' origins from Solomon's court, through their long periods of wealth and privilege, to their current twilight existence. The story is about the black Jews and white Jews, separated by a narrow swamp-like water strip and differing in skin color, trapped in a fierce feud for centuries. Only now, as their total number has dwindled to less than 50 and they are on the brink of extinction, have the two remaining Jewish communities in southern India begun to realize that their fate and demise are the same. An interesting, informative story that will be useful to both history enthusiasts and students of anthropology and world cultures.
