Aizsardzība pret nodrupšanu: Trauku malas ir visjutīgākās vietas pret triecieniem. Melnā krāsa bieži bija pirmā emaljas kārta (grunts), kas labāk saistījās ar metālu. Pat ja dekoratīvā (piemēram, baltā vai zilā) emalja pie malas nodrupa, melnā gruntskārta turpināja aizsargāt metālu no rūsēšanas.
Defektu maskēšana: Ražošanas procesā emaljas klājums uz asām malām mēdz būt nevienmērīgs. Tumša apmale palīdzēja vizuāli noslēpt šos negludumus.
Vizuālais akcents: Melnā vai dažreiz tumši zilā maliņa kalpoja kā vienkāršs, grafisks elements, kas padarīja masveidā ražoto preci nedaudz pievilcīgāku.

☕ The production of enamelware in the USSR flourished after World War II, when it was necessary to provide the population with hygienic and durable dishes. ☕ Enamel is a layer of glass that is fused onto a metal (usually steel or cast iron) base at a temperature of 800-850°C. This process made the dishes resistant to corrosion and acids, which was essential for canning and long-term cooking.

💡 Many pots, bowls and mugs made in the USSR had a characteristic narrow black band along the upper edge. This had both practical and aesthetic reasons:
Protection against chipping: The edges of dishes are the most sensitive places to impact. Black paint was often the first layer of enamel (primer), which adhered better to the metal. Even if the decorative (for example, white or blue) enamel chipped at the edge, the black primer continued to protect the metal from rusting.
Masking defects: In the production process, the enamel coating on sharp edges tends to be uneven. A dark border helped to visually hide these irregularities.
Visual accent: The black or sometimes dark blue border served as a simple, graphic element that made the mass-produced product a little more attractive.
