The Plague Doctor is one of the most popular and revered masks at the Venetian carnival. Complemented by a costume in the same style, it allows one to remain unrecognized. However, it's destined not to go unnoticed, and the outfit seems gloomy only at first glance.
The history of the mystical character's appearance is quite prosaic. In the
Middle Ages, the plague was rampant in Venice. To avoid infection, doctors covered all parts of their bodies and soaked their clothes in wax or oil. A wide-brimmed hat indicated that this was a doctor.
The most interesting part of the costume is the face of unusual shape. Aromatic oils and medicinal herbs were placed in the long beak. Whether they helped against the dangerous disease is unknown, but they dulled the smell of death.
