Antique coffee pair. Russian Empire period. Turn of the 19th-20th century (around 1890-1910). Thin-walled porcelain.
Exquisite antique coffee pair with an approximate volume of 90 ml, made from very thin, semi-transparent porcelain characteristic of high-quality porcelain at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The porcelain is light and airy, with the cup walls being transparent to light, which is a sign of quality porcelain.
The cup has an elegant wavy rim, and its surface is adorned with vertical relief lines, giving the shape depth and creating a beautiful play of light on the porcelain surface.
An interesting technical detail: in thin-walled porcelain products, craftsmen often used vertical relief as a kind of rigidity rib. These lines not only decorate the item but also provide additional strength to the very thin porcelain. This was a typical technical solution of porcelain manufactories at the end of the 19th century.
The cup handle is of refined, plastic form, thin and elegant, harmoniously complementing the overall silhouette of the item.
The saucer is designed with a wavy edge and decorated with fine relief ray lines emanating from the center.
The decor is made in an exquisite late 19th-century style:
— hand painting with gentle rose motifs
— gilded decorative ornaments and elegant twists
— fine plant elements around the saucer edge
— additional decor inside the cup, which is a relatively rare and complex decorative detail. The combination of thin porcelain, relief forms, hand painting, and gilding creates a noble and very elegant character of the item.
Such coffee pairs were used for serving strong coffee and were part of a refined table culture at the turn of the 19th-20th century.
An interesting antique fact: cups with a volume of 80–100 ml were specifically intended for strong coffee, which was served in small portions at the time. Therefore, such pairs were usually part of coffee or dessert sets.
Based on the shape, relief, and decoration style, such porcelain forms were produced by M. S. Kuznetsov porcelain factories, which were the largest porcelain manufacturer in the Russian Empire.
