Large vintage melchior spoon-strainer, 1890-1930, silver-plated with gilded strainer
This is a rare, large vintage spoon-strainer made of melchior with high-quality silver plating (EPNS A1). A1 indicates a particularly thick layer of silver plating, ensuring longevity and making this item suitable for use for many years to come. The strainer is additionally gold-plated, maintaining its shine and protecting it from prolonged use.
The engraved initials A.K. can be seen on the bottom of the handle, indicating the
owner's family. Such individual marking suggests that the item was part of a specially ordered set of cutlery, affordable only to a limited and wealthy segment of society. In the early 20th century, such engraved and silver-plated cutlery was an expensive luxury item that demonstrated family status and high table culture. Each item with initials cost extra, indicating careful attention to serving and aesthetics—tea, compotes, broths, and various infusions were served with special elegance.
Length: 18.5 cm
The strainer is deep and large—this is not a small spoon for a single cup, but a full-fledged spoon-strainer suitable for straining large tea services or large teapot infusions, as well as herbal and berry infusions, spices, broths, and various culinary and table serving tasks.
The condition is very good—the silver plating on the handle is preserved, the gold on the strainer is intact, with no deformations. The light patina adds to the historical charm and authenticity of the item.
