This book, first published in 1927, is an important primary source on Tarot and the Western occult tradition as a whole. It describes the Kabbalistic, astronomical, symbolic, initiatory, divinatory, and other aspects of Tarot from the perspective of the French esoteric school founded in the 19th century by Eliphas Levi.

The Tarot deck drawn by the author of this book, Levi's disciple Oswald Wirth, has been exemplary for over a hundred years in artistic execution and depth of symbolism. Wirth's Arcana were used to illustrate many authors' books on Tarot in the 19th and 20th centuries.
