Painting | Engraving | 1593. Size 45cm by 32cm with frame (wooden).
Depicted is a half-portrait of Susanna Fugger (1539–1588) in half-profile to the left. Daughter of Anton Fugger and Anna Relinger, married to Tyrolean Baron Balthasar II von Trautson (after 1531–1594), dressed in aristocratic mannerism-style attire with a fabric cap and holding a flower in her left hand. The model's name is engraved inside the frame. Engraver Dominicus Custos (1559–1615) does not have his printed signature. The portrait is
framed by a separate engraved frame, representing a frame of intertwined bands and grotesque ornaments. Among the decorations are two sphinxes and several angels with musical instruments (including cornet and alto). On the reverse, there is a Latin text about her brother Jakob (1542–1598) and a list of his children. Sheet 79 from the series of portraits of women and men from the Fugger family. This series was started in 1593 by Dominicus Custos and continued by his stepsons Lukas and Wolfgang Kilian until the early 1620s when it was published as a completed work. Represents a print from a gift edition with wide ornamental frames, which is significantly rarer than the small format portraits that were also printed separately.
