Legendary Brno Leather Chair 1980’s
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe
Design gem, very heavy and substantial, 2 chairs available
Price for one chair
The elegant Brno lounge chair was created in 1929 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and design partner Lilly Reich for a modernist-style house built in Brno, Czech Republic, for Fritz and Greta Tugendhat, whose grandson lives in an award-winning modern house in Sarasota. The original chair was made of stainless steel and upholstered in leather. The C-shaped frame curve made it comfortable,
durable, and innovative in its stark simplicity. In 1938, the Tugendhats, who were Jewish, fled Czechoslovakia, and the Gestapo confiscated their house. That same year, Mies van der Rohe left Europe for the United States. Lilly Reich ended up in a concentration camp until 1943. Today, the Tugendhat house is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Brno chairs are still produced by Knoll, for approximately $1900 each. Always buy in pairs, as they are meant to be grouped.
