Pastel under glass, wooden frame. Dimensions with frame: 28x21.5 cm Dailis ROŽLAPA (1932 - 2014) Painter Dailis Rožlapa has worked systematically in theater, cinema, and painting. The artist has mainly focused on the landscape genre – initially using watercolors and oils, then gouache and tempera, but since the 1970s, he has used mixed techniques based on thick cardboard or plywood, striving for mood and expressive texture.
Dailis Rožlapa was one of the most active innovators of new forms in Latvian scenography in the
1960s. Using photographs, posters, drawings, film projections, sliding platforms, movable tripods, and other constructive elements, Rožlapa has operated with them in a light, and agile, achieving a dynamic stage image, although some of his works are laconically harsh and monumental (J. Rainis' Indulis un Ārija, 1965, at the Youth Theater). For the most part, however, Rožlapa's scenography has a playful, humorous expression.
Dailis Rožlapa graduated from J. Rozentāls Riga Art School (1954) and the Art History and Theory Department of the Latvian State Academy of Art with his diploma work "The Development of Set Design in Latvian Dramatic Theaters in Riga until 1940" (1968, supervisor Rasma Lāce). The artist has participated in exhibitions since 1958 and has been a member of the Artists' Union since 1970. He worked as a make-up artist at the Riga Film Studio (1954–1957), stage painter and artist-staging designer at the Liepāja and Jaunatnes theaters, and artist-staging designer at the Riga Film Studio (1971–1989).
