One of the world's largest museums for the fine arts of the 20th and 21st centuries opened in Munich in September 2002. The Pinakothek der Moderne unites four important collections of paintings, sculptures, video installations, photographs, hand-drawn drawings, architectural models, and design objects on over 12,000 square meters in a new museum building that is already causing a sensation, and whose dimensions are comparable to the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Tate Modern in London.

To mark this extraordinary event, the Pinakothek and DuMont Literatur und Kunst Verlag have jointly agreed on a publication program that will initially publicize the opening activities to a broad public at home and abroad and subsequently accompany the publications of the triad of Pinakotheks: the Old, the New, and the Pinakothek der Moderne.
