This cross was made in the 1880-1890s in Saint Petersburg by Rudolf Weide, who specialized in fine enamel and cross pendants. Weide was born in Revel (Tallinn, Estonia). Later, he moved to Petersburg, where he became an outstanding jeweler. From 1874 to 1915, Weide owned a gold and silver workshop on Nevsky, 74, the main avenue of Petersburg.
The shape of the cross is traditional for Russian Orthodoxy. The front side of the cross is covered with enamel depicting the body of Christ.
The skull at the base of the cross
represents Adam, the first man who was buried at Golgotha (Hill of the Skull), where Jesus was later crucified.
The abbreviation on the white enameled scroll on the upper arm of the cross reads: "JESUS OF NAZARETH, KING OF THE JEWS."
On the reverse side, the inscription reads SAVE AND PROTECT.
CONDITION:
Very good antique condition with minimal signs of age.
The enamel is intact.
