Paper/watercolor. 42/30 cm Andris Merkmanis (1943–2006) Born into the family of set designer and architect Leonīds Merkmanis and actress Vilma Vārna.

Graduated from J. Rozentāls Riga Art School. Studied scenography under G. Zemgals at the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Art. Diploma work – sets and costumes for the Riga Operetta Theatre musical "Skūpsti mani, Kēt!" (Kiss Me, Kate!). He has created scenography not only for performances in all Latvian theaters, but also for more than ten feature films. Member of the Artists' Union since 1970. He also worked in portrait and landscape painting using oil, watercolor and tempera techniques.
